Another of Norfolk’s Blue flag beach, situated between the towns of Sheringham and Cromer the lovely sands of West Runton beach are often overlooked.
For families looking for a day out, low tide is, the best time to visit as you then get the hard sand, rather than the pebbly beach which is what is left at high tide.
Towards the high tide mark the beach is quite shingley, but as the tide goes out a large expanse of fine sand is revealed, along with numerous rockpools.
The beach is also home to some important geology. A designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) West Runton is home to the largest chalk reef in Europe. This makes it not only popular with divers but surfers too.
West Runton beach is best known for the discovery of the mammoth bones in 1990 and is one of the best beaches for fossil hunting and rock pooling.
