STAITHE VIEW – BURNHAM DEEPDALE
WHY NORFOLK? WHY STAITHE VIEW?
Although we’ve travelled to many parts of the world, Norfolk has always been our ‘go-to’ place for holidays, birthdays, weekends with friends, last-minute overnight stays and even day trips. Living in a landlocked area, we love the big skies, the vastness of the Norfolk coast and the tranquility it instills. For years we dreamed of having a little place there and 2021 was the year we found our perfect haven. Staithe View ticked all our boxes and added a couple of pre-ticked boxes to our list that we never thought possible: marsh/sea view, not on the road, near the coastal footpath, parking, a short walk to the bus stop, shops and a pub, quiet. What more could we ask for?
TLC
Not that it didn’t need a little TLC initially. New windows were made by two Norfolk craftsmen and one, now our lovely friend Gerry, made a beautiful pair of oak doors to the conservatory to keep the kitchen cosy in winter.
COUPLES RETREAT
We set about making it a comfy couples’ retreat – the sort of place we love to stay – with new heating, flooring, furnishings and even new loos. And best of all, we created the luxury of an en-suite shower room. Much as we love our friends, it’s nice not to have to share one bathroom.
WHY STAY AT STAITHE VIEW?
It’s in a perfect tucked-away spot with glorious views over the marsh but just a minute to the shops, petrol station and bus stop. You can park the car and leave it there all week. The coastal footpath is just around the corner. And it’s only five minutes to the White Horse, which serves great food and in the summer, has a wonderful marsh side bar, from which to watch the sunset.
As for the house, it’s been renovated and refurbished to a high standard with calm, neutral decor to continue the peace and tranquility you’ll find on the marsh. For winter it has a has a cosy lounge with a wood-burning stove and comfy sofas. For summer it has two outside areas, including a pretty south-facing garden (with herbs) to relax or eat in. And with no streetlight next to the house, you will be amazed at how many stars you can see in those famous big skies on clear nights.
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU’RE STAYING AT STAITHE VIEW?
Walk, walk, walk. Each visit, our first walk is down the Drove, and the sight of the small, moored houseboat with the marsh stretched out beyond never fails to lift our spirits. In summer at high tide, it’s like standing on the edge of a vast lake. Low tide reveals the strange beauty in the fold of mud flats.
We never tire of the footpath walk to Burnham Overy Staithe. It’s one of the quietest stretches and you’ll see geese, curlews, egrets, red shanks, marsh harriers if you’re lucky, and many more. Walk all the way and have coffee, lunch, tea, dinner – anything-at The Hero Pub. Walk back or take the bus.
Turn left for The White Horse, Brancaster Staithe Harbour, Brancaster and beyond.
For other favourite walks we get the bus or drive west to RSPB Titchwell, Thornham, Holme or east to Holkham, Wells, Stiffkey, Morston, Blakeney and Cley. Seal watching trips from Morston Quay are also recommended.
For shoppers, Burnham Market, Holt and Cley have lots to offer, and Dalegate Market in Burnham Deepdale has pop up shops of artisan wares.
There’s also lots for history lovers to enjoy, including Holkham Hall, Binham Priory, Creake Abbey, Blickling Estate and many others. Sandringham is a short drive away.
ANY DOWNSIDES?
Only leaving. As we drive away, we can’t wait to come back to our dream home from home under the big skies of Norfolk.
